Medical examiner: Hemsley died from lung mass

Sherman Hemsley, who played George Jefferson in ?The Jeffersons,? died from a lung mass, according to a post-mortem report from the El Paso County Office of the Medical Examiner, which was first obtained by TMZ. The actor, whose out-of-touch nouveau riche character made him a star on the hit CBS comedy, passed away in his El Paso, Texas, home on July 24 at the age of 74.
The medical examiner's report notes that medical experts advised Hemsley to undergo chemotherapy and radiation before he developed ?superior vena cava syndrome,? caused by the lung mass, which ultimately precipitated his death. On all other accounts, the medical examiner noted that Hemsley was healthy and his manner of death was "natural."
After his run as George Jefferson, reruns of the show on TV Land and Nick at Nite caused a resurgence in "The Jeffersons' " popularity. Pushed back in to the spotlight,?Hemsley guest starred on a variety of sitcoms with primarily black casts, such as "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "The Wayans Brothers" and "The Hughleys."
Differentiating himself from his TV self, in 1996?Hemsley?told The New York Times?that he was in fact no way similar to his?humorously arrogant?character on "The Jeffersons." "I?m nothing like him," he told the paper.?"I don?t slam doors in people?s faces, and I?m not a bigot. I?m just an old hippie. You know?-- peace and love.?

CSN: How can Reid move on after son's death?
For the Eagles, training camp continues and the calendar remains unchanged. The first preseason game will arrive as scheduled on Thursday. The regular season will open for business in September. The lights will come on as usual.
But it isn?t the same now for Andy Reid. It can?t be, not after the loss of his son Garrett. It is impossible to imagine the pain he must be feeling. How does a father cope with the death of his child? How does he begin putting his life back together?
All the good feeling that surrounded the Eagles camp, all the optimism and hope for the 2012 season is now stilled. And what we have seen of the new Andy Reid ? more open, more human ? only makes it more poignant. He seemed happier this summer, healthier and more energized, eager for the challenge of a new season.
But now ? what?
The troubles of his sons Garrett and Britt are well documented. They went through a terrible time, which included drug addiction and prison, but they appeared to be doing much better. Britt is on the football staff at Temple and Garrett was with his father at Eagles camp. Everything seemed fine until Sunday?s tragic discovery.
Regardless of what you may think of Andy Reid as a coach, you have to feel enormous sympathy for what he and wife Tammy are going through. The news of their son?s death brought back memories of the November 2007, press conference in which a tight-lipped Reid addressed the sentencing of the two boys in Montgomery County Court.
?This has been a battle that we?ve dealt with here for a few years,? Reid said that day. ?Our prayers are obviously with the boys, for their future and to make sure things work out where they can live a normal life down the road.?
The pain was palpable in his face and voice. Now comes this, the worst pain of all.
According to Jeff Lurie, Reid intends to continue coaching. He is expected back on the sidelines this week. He is doing what his good friend Tony Dungy did after his teenage son James died in 2005. Dungy said it was returning to football that enabled him to heal.
In his book ?Quiet Strength,? Dungy wrote:
?The next decision for me was when I should return to Indianapolis and go back to work. Jim Irsay (owner) and Bill Polian (general manager) both told me to feel free to take the rest of the season off. They wanted me to make sure that Lauren (his wife) and the kids would be okay. Lauren and I?talked it over and we decided I should go back to work.
?As painful as it was, we needed to move forward. Getting back into our routine was important. Lauren knew me well. Work would help take my mind off my own pain?The Colts were surviving without me. Jim Caldwell had been running the team in my absence. They didn?t need me, but I needed them.
?I returned to work that Thursday. Jim Caldwell called a team meeting to announce that he was handing the reins back to me. Emotions ran high. The guys were extremely warm and welcoming and I was overwhelmed by their love and support. As a group, we had always leaned on each other in difficult times. I needed them now more than ever.?
In his book, Dungy details his life on and off the field and how it shaped his values. It is a book about football, but it is also a book about faith and how a man?s faith is tested. For Dungy, the greatest test was the death of his son. In the book he described what the Reids must be feeling and will continue to feel.
?People sometimes ask if I went through a typical grief cycle and what I learned from having gone through it,? Dungy wrote. ?I learned two primary things from our experience and from talking to countless other parents. First, there is no TYPICAL grief cycle and, second, it is not something I WENT through. I?m still grieving as is Lauren. I don?t know that I?ll ever look at this in the past tense as something I?ve emerged from.?
It is a tough life, coaching. It is particularly tough in the NFL where coaches are known to sleep in their offices and not go home for days at a time. Reid refers to himself as a grinder which means he will put another reel of film on the projector when another coach might be hitting the off switch. It is part of the reason he made it to the NFL but on a day like this it does little to ease the pain.
In 2000, Reid allowed the NFL Films cameras to follow him around for a week while he prepared for a game against the Giants. I was the producer assigned to the show so I spent long hours hanging in Reid?s office and walking the darkened halls of Veterans Stadium.
One night over dinner, Reid started talking about going to see Garrett play football that Saturday. His son was the starting center for Harriton High School and they were playing their first game. The Eagles were scheduled to have a morning practice that day but Reid said it would not keep him from making it to Garrett?s game in time for kickoff.
I asked if it would be OK for our film crew to follow him.
?If you can keep up with me,? he said laughing. ?I?m gonna be driving fast, man.?
Reid made it to the game with time to spare and was greeted with a standing ovation as he climbed the bleacher steps. The Eagles had upset Dallas the previous week, 41-14, so the coach was a popular guy. Other parents came over to talk and shake his hand, but he was more interested in watching Garrett play.
When the game ended, Garrett came to the fence where his parents were standing. Andy gave Garrett a hug and said, ?Nice job, G.? He was just like any other father hugging his son after a high school football game.
I?ve always remembered that moment because it was so warm and genuine.
And it has never seemed sadder than now.

Lenovo unveils lighter, quicker ThinkPad laptop
BEIJING (AP) ? Lenovo has unveiled a lighter, quicker ThinkPad notebook computer inspired by the convenience of tablets and smartphones.
The Chinese computer maker displayed the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon on Monday and said it would go on sale later this month.
A Lenovo vice president, Dilip Bhatia, said it will have a longer battery life and lighter weight. He said that was in response to demands by customers who want a tablet's convenience but need a notebook's wider range of functions.
Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad brand with IBM Corp.'s personal computer unit in 2005. Lenovo passed Dell Inc. last year to become the second-largest PC manufacturer after Hewlett-Packard Co.

Market bomb kills 3 in northwest Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan police say a remote-controlled bomb in a busy market has killed two policemen and one civilian in the country's northwest. The explosion went off as shoppers were hurrying to buy food to break the day's fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Faryab provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Khaliq Asye said Saturday that the explosives were detonated remotely and appeared to target police, who had stopped at the market in Ghormach district about 500 kilometers (300 miles) northwest of Kabul, the capital.
The blast came after 6 p.m. Friday, prime shopping hour for iftar, the meal marking the end of the daily fast.
Asye blamed Taliban insurgents for the attack. Faryab province has in recent years been relatively peaceful, but recently has seen an uptick in insurgent attacks.

The Asus G75VW-DS71 is nicely priced for a midrange gaming laptop, and it works as a multimedia behemoth. But it starts to wheeze when taxed with high resolution and detail settings. Think of it as a part-time gaming rig.
The G75VW is definitely not an ultraportable: It measures roughly 2 by 16.5 by 12.75 inches (HWD), and weighs just over 9 pounds without its included power adapter and mouse (which bring it up to 12 pounds). Thus, it's really designed to move around the house rather than serve as your regular commuter laptop?unless your daily commute is to a gaming center and you have Herculean strength and stamina. The bright 17.3-inch screen has a 1080p HD (1,920-by-1,080-resolution) screen, good for both playing games and watching videos using the built-in Blu-ray drive. The system comes with a pair of speedy 750GB 7,200rpm SATA hard drives, which were divided into four logical volumes on our review model. Theoretically, you could run dual- or triple-boot environments and play different games in different operating systems to avoid conflict between the installs. Also, you can separate your video data from your gaming data on separate volumes as well. If maximum drive capacity is what you're after, on the other hand, you could stripe both drives together to make a single 1.5TB drive, which may be an advantage if you're using the G75VW for video production. Speaking of videos, the laptop's full-size HDMI port can be used to connect the laptop to an HDTV or other external display. It also has four USB 3.0 ports, as well as a card reader, VGA, Gigabit Ethernet, and audio ports. The last port is a Mini DisplayPort, which is handy for the few users with Mini DisplayPort monitors, but it hints at the chassis' potential. (This port is likely to be upgraded to a Thunderbolt port on future models.) The G75VW has a backlit keyboard with numeric keypad, and comes with an Asus gaming mouse; you're all set out of the box for controlling your favorite games. The speakers and subwoofer are clear and put out a good amount of sound. The laptop comes preinstalled with some Asus software, in particular recovery and webcam utilities. The inevitable Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is present, as is Adobe Reader. There's also an Asus power management utility, which can switch power settings between battery saving, high-performance, and multimedia options, a nice feature if you find it annoying when the screen dims too quickly in Windows' default "balanced" mode. The G75VW comes with a quad-core Intel Core i7-3610QM processor, 12GB of DDR3 memory, and a high-end Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M graphics card. All these components work together to deliver very good multimedia and passable gaming performance. The system completed our Handbrake video test in 1 minute 18 seconds, and the Photoshop CS5 test in 3:24. Both scores are as quick as you'd see on a full-blown desktop, so the G75VW is a true desktop replacement. The Editors' Choice Alienware M17x R4
beat the G75VW at both tests thanks to its faster processor, but the G75VW matched the Eurocom Leopard 2.0
and MSI GT70 0NC-011US . This is no wonder, as the MSI GT70 and the Asus G75VW both have the same processor.
It's on the game grid where the gaming laptops shake out. All the aforementioned laptops are fine playing both Crysis (upwards of 60 frames per second, or fps) and Lost Planet 2 (more than 40fps) at the lower resolution and middle or medium quality settings, but it's at the higher settings where the higher-end laptops earn their price tags. Both the Alienware M17x R4 and Eurocom Leopard 2.0 are playable on both games at their native resolutions. The Eurocom Leopard 2.o0 comes out ahead of all three competitors, but that's understandable considering that it costs almost twice as much as the G75VW. As it is, the G75VW and MSI GT70 are "almost playable" at Crysis and Lost Planet 2, but could be smoother with adjustments to quality settings.
With all these power-consuming components, it's not surprising that the G75VW only lasted 2 hours 59 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test. This is on par for gaming rigs, as the Alienware M17x only lasted 2:36 and the Eurocom Leopard a mere 1:48. This isn't much of a drawback, as the system won't be far from power for extended periods of time anyway. This is a system that will roam the house, migrating from power plug to power plug.
All in all, the Asus G75VW-DS71 isn't too bad. It's decently priced. It's a good choice for the multimedia maven who needs the bright HD screen and copious storage and games once in a while. It's not that portable?if that's what you want, you'd be better off with an ultrabook with a 1080p screen like our high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice, the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 . The G75VW also falls behind the competition (like the Editors' Choice Alienware M17x R4) when gaming, with slow frame rates when image quality and screen resolution are set high. These stumbles may keep the G75VW from leading the pack, but it still merits a look if you're limited to a midrange gaming budget.

FRIDAY, Aug. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Kids with a serious food allergy generally have to steer clear of the offending food, but methods now under development could change that common scenario.
More than 3 million American youths -- about one of every 25 -- have a food allergy of some sort, usually to milk, eggs or peanuts, according to U.S. government statistics. For them, "avoidance has been the mainstay of treatment for a long time," said Dr. William Silvers, an allergist in private practice in Vail, Colo., and a spokesman for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
"Now what we're seeing is an increased interest in oral immunotherapy," Silvers said. "This means giving small and slowly increased doses orally of foods that children are allergic to, and building up the amount ingested over time to desensitize the child to the food so they can tolerate it."
That doesn't come string-free, though. Dr. Carla Davis, an allergist at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, noted that once children have been desensitized to a certain food, they have to continue eating it regularly or they'll become allergic to the food again.
"There isn't a maintenance of tolerance if you avoid the foods," she explained.
Along with desensitization, another potential new treatment for food allergies is a drug called omalizumab (Xolair). Silvers said that it works by blocking the activity of the allergy-causing substance known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) so that an allergic reaction never starts.
However, the food allergy would come back if a person were to stop using the drug, which is currently available only in an injectable form and has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in children younger than 12.
Some researchers, though, think that a combination of the two treatments might be better than either alone. Early reports from a very small study found that nine of 11 children who were given Xolair and then desensitized to milk were able to consume up to 12 ounces of dairy a day without a reaction.
Davis said that researchers also are testing herbal formulations and that one particular combination of nine herbs was able to prevent a serious allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, in mice. "It's another one of the treatments that may be up-and-coming," she said, though there's no evidence in humans yet.
What has been proven true, though, is that many kids simply outgrow their food allergies, even some of the most deadly ones. Davis said that as many as one in five youngsters may outgrow an allergy to peanuts but that allergies to eggs, milk, soy and wheat are most often outgrown. In general, peanuts, tree nuts and seafood allergies tend to stay with children as they grow, she said.
To know whether a child has outgrown a food allergy requires repeated skin and blood tests, Silvers said. "If IgE levels in the blood decrease over time, or if skin testing comes back negative or a very small reaction, a child or adult can be given a food challenge to see if they'll react," he said.
To be safe, though, the testing "must be done under a physician's supervision," Davis said, because a serious reaction could occur if the youngster has not outgrown the allergy.
For kids with lingering food allergies, Silvers recommended that the child or parent always carry the antihistamine Benadryl and an epinephrine injection pen. If it's suspected that the child accidentally ingested an allergy-inducing food, the youngster should take the antihistamine right away. If the allergic reaction worsens, administer the epinephrine and get to an emergency room as quickly as possible.
It's important to go to the hospital after a serious allergic reaction, Davis said, because there can be a second wave to the reaction about four to six hours later.
Many children have their own epinephrine pens at their school nurse's office. In Chicago, the public school system recently decided to take the next step and keep a supply of epinephrine pens in every school, and train school personnel in their use, so that they're prepared for any serious allergic reactions.
"This is a good idea because about one in five children have their first serious reaction in school," Davis said.
For those living with food allergies, Davis said, it's important to find a balance between being vigilant and being overanxious. Parents should be "prepared for a reaction, but shouldn't expect one all the time," she said. "Some parents become extremely anxious about the contact their child may have with food. Health vigilance is important, but so is quality of life."

The suit goes on to claim that Hopper - who starred in the 2011 Gus Van Sant film "Restless" - "engaged in sexually offensive conduct with her," which allegedly included sexual intercourse and oral copulation, once he thought she was intoxicated.
The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court last week, claims that such incidents occurred multiple times, starting in April 2011 and ending February 2012.
The mother of the victim - identified as Jane Doe in the suit - says that her daughter suffered mental and other injuries and had to undergo treatment from multiple healthcare professionals.
