China Central Bank Chief Vows Prudent 2012 Monetary Policy

December 31, 2011, 4:14 AM EST

By Bloomberg News

(Updates with Zhou interview with Caixin in 2nd paragraph.)

Dec. 31 (Bloomberg) -- The People?s Bank of China will maintain a ?prudent? monetary stance to ensure policy remains stable in 2012 and improve its management of foreign-exchange, Governor Zhou Xiaochuan said.

The central bank will ?deepen financial reform, accelerate the development of financial markets, and strengthen and improve foreign-exchange management,? Zhou said in a New Year message on the PBOC?s website. Also today, Caixin magazine quoted Zhou as saying that while the yuan is near equilibrium, the currency?s trading band may widen to more than its current 0.5 percent on either side of the central bank rate.

Expansion of the world?s second-biggest economy is slowing as global growth falters and the government maintains curbs on the property market to cool speculation and price gains. The central bank may cut banks? reserve requirements in January as a weeklong Chinese New Year holiday increases demand for cash and Premier Wen Jiabao tilts his focus toward sustaining growth.

?Accumulating evidence of weakness is building the case for policy easing,? Citigroup Inc. economists, including Ding Shuang, said in a report before today?s release, citing the slower pace of expansion in industrial production and fixed- asset investment. ?We expect more policy easing in the months ahead, starting with another reserve ratio cut by the Chinese New Year.? The holiday starts Jan. 23.

Growth Slows

China?s gross domestic product expanded 9.1 percent from a year earlier in the third quarter, the least in two years. The pace may have fallen to 8.5 percent in the fourth quarter, Ding said in a Dec. 30 note.

Inflation slowed to 4.2 percent in November, still above the government?s target of 4 percent for the whole year. China?s consumer prices probably rose about 5 percent this year, exceeding the government?s target of 4 percent, and inflation controls have had some effect, Zhou said, according to Caixin.

?The economic growth momentum will be strong next year, as the inflation situation is improving,? Zhou said, according to Caixin. ?The urgency of containing inflation isn?t as high as that in the beginning of 2011.?

Zhou said the central bank will maintain a reasonable scale of social financing and make efforts to optimize the credit structure. China?s current account surplus may be about 3 percent of gross domestic product in 2011, Caixin quoted Zhou as saying.

Trade Surplus

China?s merchandise trade surplus may still exceed $150 billion this year, Zhou said, according to Caixin. The country?s capital and current account balances have seen improvements though there has been ?no reversal in fundamentals? and both remain in surplus, Zhou said, according to Caixin.

China reduced in November the amount of money banks must park with the PBOC, the first cut since 2008, freeing cash to support growth as Europe?s debt crisis capped exports and the property market cooled.

Manufacturing contracted for a second month in December, a purchasing managers? index released by HSBC Holdings Plc showed. In November, China?s export growth was the weakest since 2009, excluding seasonal distortions.

Zhou also reiterated that China, the world?s biggest holder of foreign reserves, will work to strengthen and improve foreign-exchange management, improve financial services and management, and prevent systemic financial risks. He said China will push yuan reform in a gradual way, according to Caixin.

The yuan ?is getting closer to its equilibrium level after several years of gradual adjustment?, Zhou said, according to Caixin. As the currency nears its target level, the cost of further policy adjustment strategies ?may become much greater,? Caixin quoted him as saying.

The Chinese currency gained 4.7 percent against the dollar this year, its best performance since 2008. It advanced 0.40 percent to 6.2940 yesterday in Shanghai, breaking the 6.3 mark for the first since 1993, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System.

Letter airs harassment claims against HP's ex-CEO (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd's efforts to impress an HP event hostess included showing her his checking-account balance holding over $1 million, according to a letter detailing the sexual harassment allegations that led to his ouster.

The letter was obtained late Thursday by The Associated Press after the Delaware Supreme Court ruled that Hurd's lawyers, who had attempted to keep it confidential, didn't show that disclosing it would violate California privacy rights. The ruling said information that is only "mildly embarrassing" is not protected from public disclosure.

The letter, it added, does not contain trade secrets about the Palo Alto-based technology company or non-public financial information. Some sentences concerning Hurd's family were ordered redacted.

Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred sent the letter last year on behalf of Jodie Fisher, who was hired as a contract employee to help with HP networking events and who later accused Hurd of sexual harassment.

Although an HP investigation did not find any evidence to support the harassment claim, it uncovered inaccurate expense reports for his outings with Fisher. Hurd was ultimately forced out in August 2010. He now works as co-president at rival Oracle Corp.

Allred alleged in the letter that, while Fisher was ostensibly hired an HP event hostess in late 2007, she was really brought on to accompany Hurd to HP events held out of town. Throughout 2008 and 2009, Hurd made it clear he expected to have a sexual relationship with Fisher, using his "status and authority as CEO of HP," Allred alleged.

Allred claimed that Hurd made several sexual advances toward Fisher, which Fisher rejected. In 2008, while walking with Fisher in Madrid, Hurd stopped at an ATM and showed her his checking-account balance "to impress her," according to the letter.

After Fisher rejected him a final time in October 2009, she was not hired for any future HP events, Allred alleged.

Allred also alleged that in March 2008, Hurd told Fisher that HP was likely to purchase technology services vendor EDS. HP announced the $13 billion acquisition in May of that year.

HP shareholder Ernesto Espinoza had sued to have the letter unsealed. Hurd's attorney, Amy Wintersheimer, said his lawyers had requested that the letter be kept confidential because "it is filled with inaccuracies."

"The truth is, there never was any sexual harassment, which HP's investigation confirmed, and there never was any sexual relationship, which Ms. Fisher has confirmed," Wintersheimer said in a statement.

Both Allred and Hewlett-Packard Co. had no comment on the letter's contents.

Fixing Jim Rome is Burning

One thing that I started doing during the past year was listen to Jim Rome?s nationally-syndicated radio show. I was hooked immediately. While Rome may have lost some firepower over the years, his show is still the best show in sports radio. The entertainment value of the radio show stands in marked contrast to his ESPN show, Jim Rome is Burning. Earlier this year, JRIB was bumped to ESPN2 full-time, the victim of ratings that couldn?t even hold up from its NFL Live lead-in, let alone carry them to Around the Horn, and it?s easy for me to see why. It feels like it?s simply going through the motions each day, going through the same cookie-cutter pattern, like it doesn?t really care anymore. It?s a far cry not only from the radio show, but from its very earliest days, when it was launched as an hour-long show, Rome is Burning, with considerable fanfare.

What makes matters worse is that, strangely enough, many if not all of the takes on JRIB are essentially regurgitated from the radio show, which means if you listened to the radio show earlier, you have zero reason to watch JRIB to listen to the same takes again, only made worse somehow. How could the exact same takes that are so entertaining on the radio show be so boring on JRIB? Here are some modest suggestions for revitalizing JRIB and making it a more worthwhile watch each day, bringing it up to, or at least close to, the level of the radio show:

Overhaul the opening segment. While Rome is always known for his rapid-fire style, when reading takes on JRIB he seems to be on a complete 5-Hour Energy buzz and reading his takes off a teleprompter almost in monotone. Instead of being a talking head staring into a camera, perhaps in the opening segment Rome should be sitting in the easy chair he uses for the ?Alone with Rome? and ?The Forum? segments. It might help him seem less robotic. What should also help is ditching the music playing in the background during his takes, which comes off as distracting; ditching the music might help the takes feel more naturalistic, the segment less artificial. Ditching the music could also allow Rome to make smoother transitions between takes, rather than have different pieces play for each take. More radically, Rome could adopt a new style for JRIB and write entirely separate takes just for that show. Whatever he goes with, Rome should feel like he?s simply shooting the breeze about sports with us, not rattling off a script as fast as he can.

Get a helper cohost. Perhaps part of the problem is that, while both introducing the story and giving a take on it works on the radio, it causes everything to blur together on TV. Since moving to ESPN2, JRIB has arguably been put to shame by the program airing before it, the new show Dan LeBatard is Highly Questionable. One key element that helps DLHQ work is the character (and ultimately, he is a character) of Papi, who serves as LeBatard?s foil and, more importantly, sets him up by introducing the topic for him to riff on. All of ESPN?s other talk shows use multiple people in similar fashion. Perhaps JRIB would flow better if he brought in one of the people who help run his radio show to introduce each topic and set him up to give his take on each one.

Tie the segments closer together, and give Rome more of a presence in each one. Currently the sequence of a typical episode of JRIB goes like this: Rome?s takes on the day?s sports stories, an interview segment, shooting the breeze with another personality, a once-a-week ?correspondent? piece from an athlete, and one to three ?final burn? takes. These segments have little connection with each other other than sports and Jim Rome himself, and the Correspondent piece seems particularly superflouous and its purpose should be rethought. Part of the problem is that during Alone with Rome, The Forum, and the Correspondents, Rome is ultimately a cypher who stays in the background while the guest is the star of the show.

While Rome tries to get topical guests on his radio show, his guests on JRIB are often whoever he can get who?s available, which isn?t the case on PTI. DLHQ manages to get away with getting the ?best available guest? by giving the interview segment its own gimmick, but Alone with Rome is more of a straight-up interview segment, so Rome needs to make getting better guests for it a higher priority. Rome occasionally gives his own opinions during the Forum segment, but the focus there is clearly on the guest?s opinions, not his own, and the two are largely superfluous to one another. Perhaps the opening segment is so bad at providing a backbone for the show that simply fixing its issues could go far in tying the rest of the show together, but if not Rome needs to consider what he can do to make himself more of the star of the show, possibly including?

Consider ditching the Forum, or make it an occasional segment replacing Alone with Rome. If I recall correctly, when JRIB started the Forum was a full-fledged roundtable of panelists debating the day?s sports stories. Now, with the Forum taking up an entire segment on a half-hour program devoted to one guy giving a second opinion often on the same topics Rome covered in the opening segment, it seems like more of a waste of valuable time. Consider freeing the time up for another segment like the first one on two or three topics, allowing the opening segment to breathe more and allowing Rome to slow down his takes. Alternately, save some topics to be covered only in the Forum and give Rome closer to equal billing in that segment; the topic taken from Twitter in each Forum in the ESPN2 era may be a step in this direction.

Rome should take his show?s move to ESPN2 as a wake-up call that JRIB is broken and needs fixing. Wikipedia claims that Rome has, in the past, threatened to abandon his radio show entirely and do only a TV show. If so, I hope that JRIB as it exists today is not what such a show would look like. The best thing that could probably happen to JRIB would probably be going back to an hour-long show, which probably can?t be had without leaving ESPN. Short of that, Rome needs to find a way to get the show to work within the time that he has.

Gingrich sharpens attacks on Romney, Paul (AP)

DYERSVILLE, Iowa ? So much for staying positive.

In just the last 24 hours, Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has blasted rival Mitt Romney as a "Massachusetts moderate" who isn't "man enough" to take responsibility for the harsh attack ads being run on his behalf. And he lambasted Ron Paul's views as "totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American."

As his lead in Iowa polls has evaporated, Gingrich's rhetoric has grown ever sharper, even as he insists ? sometimes in the same breath ? that he's running a positive campaign.

"I am not going to go negative, period," Gingrich said Tuesday at a campaign stop in Dyersville, Iowa, to appreciative murmurs from the crowd that had crammed into the National Farm Toy Museum to hear him speak. That remark came after a CNN interview in which he said he wouldn't vote for Paul if the Texas congressman became the GOP nominee and he mocked Romney for not having the courage to face him in a one-on-one debate.

It is classic Gingrich, the bomb-throwing leader of the Republican revolution who even now seems to chafe at minding his manners. He acknowledged Tuesday that it has taken "discipline" not to counterpunch as the attacks have flooded in.

So he is trying to have it both ways.

In Dubuque, Iowa, at the first stop of a 22-city bus tour leading up to Jan. 3 caucuses, Gingrich offered Romney praise, then promptly opened fire.

"I don't want to be invidious about Gov. Romney, who I said I think is a very competent manager and a very smart guy," Gingrich said. "But to have somebody who is a Massachusetts moderate, who said he did not want to go back to the Reagan-Bush years, who voted as a Democrat for Paul Tsongas in `92, who campaigned to the left of Teddy Kennedy.... to have him run a commercial that questions my conservatism?"

In the evolving Gingrich playbook, statements which are factually accurate are not attacks.

"I was describing him accurately," he said in South Carolina last week after taking a jab at Romney.

For Gingrich, taking the high road may be a strategy born as much out of necessity as ideology.

His campaign nearly collapsed earlier this year, so he trails the other Republican frontrunners in fundraising, which limits his ability to launch a sustained negative campaign.

The former Georgia congressman also seems to have made the political calculation that to win over voters, he must soften some of the brash rough edges that defined his tenure as House speaker.

After all, he made his political reputation perfecting the art of using words as weapons.

A 1996 memo to Republican House candidates, which Gingrich endorsed in a cover letter, urged Republicans running for office to use words like "traitor," "pathetic" and "sick" to define Democratic opponents, their proposals and their party. "Language matters,'" the memo said.

Campaigning for the White House, he has taken his own advice.

A favorite Gingrich technique in recent weeks has been to extol his campaign's positive tone while eviscerating nameless GOP opponents, using words like "disgusting" and "reprehensible."

"Shame on them for not caring enough about America to be positive," he said.

He has a receptive audience in Iowa voters, weary of being bombarded with nasty robocalls, mailers and television ads as the primary hurtles into the final days.

"I'm just sick of it all," said Bette Carlson, who showed up to hear Gingrich speak at Mabe's Pizza in Decorah, Iowa, Tuesday night. "Anyone who stays out of the mud improves their chances of getting my vote."

Still, the Gingrich camp maintains it is giving the pledge more than just lip service. They note an Iowa staffer had to resign after calling Mormonism ? Romney's religion ? a cult.

And Gingrich argues he has enough cash to run a negative ad war if he wanted to. He notes his campaign made the choice to run positive ads across Iowa beginning Wednesday.

Still, Gingrich might know better than most this election cycle that negative ads work.

He has seen his support slide as the airwaves in Iowa have filled with ads reminding voters of his ethics woes, a public service announcement he shot with Democrat Nancy Pelosi and his lucrative work for Freddie Mac.

The libertarian-leaning Paul has assailed Gingrich for "serial hypocrisy," painting him as a career politician who lined his pockets after leaving office by selling access.

In an interview, Romney called him "zany."

How long can Gingrich keep up the positive facade? Asked if he would he would continue the commitment in a general election against Democrat Barack Obama, Gingrich dodged the question.

"Barack Obama's record is so terrible that if you just tell the truth it sounds negative," Gingrich said

U.S. Military Family Gets $20,000 Christmas Surprise

A deserving military family walked into a Home Depot last week and left with a $20,000 gift certificate for home repairs.

The store employees, in their signature orange aprons, crowded around the entrance of their Salt Lake City location -- waiting to give the Dilley family, the best Christmas they've had in a long time.

This year the chain launched its first, 'Gift of Good' campaign, a national web-driven campaign to find the most deserving military family to be awarded with the home repair certificate

"This program was inspired by the spirit of giving during the holidays and we thought the most meaningful gift to give is simply helping out a neighbor in need," said Home Depot spokeswoman Nicole Carriere.

A group of "do-it-yourself" and military bloggers took to the web to find a deserving family, Carriere explained. The web-experts narrowed down the military families, relying on a network of diaries, personal accounts and social media.

The group was made up of bloggers "who we've worked with previously, or who we thought would be interested based on the topics they covered," Carriere said. "Many of them hadn't met in person or didn't follow each other before the program and it was great for us to watch them build friendships with each other and form their own mini-community around the program."

The web-experts took months to narrow down the military families, all deserving. They even interviewed local media, peeked into personal networks and looked to other bloggers. The bloggers, one of them an Atlanta resident, told Carriere the decision was incredibly tough but they settled on SSgt. Kevin Dilley, his wife Tyrena and their five kids. Dilley has been overseas three times to Iraq and Afghanistan and right now he's deployed to Greenland near the Arctic Circle.

While he is a world away Tyrena is at home with their kids. Two of their children have spina bifida, a developmental disorder when some vertebrae overlying the spinal cord are not fully formed and remain open. Both kids are in wheel chairs and have undergone multiple surgeries.

"They are very positive, upbeat and humble people ? the last people who would ever ask for anyone to do anything for them," Carriere said.

The family lives in an older home in need of a lot of renovation. Volunteers and home repair contractors checked out the home to assess their needs but the initial wish list includes essentials such as roof repair, a new HVAC system, flooring and insulation and handicap improvements such as ramps.

"The community is really rallying around this family to do as much as they can to help ? we're extremely excited to kick off the project," Carriere said.

WASHINGTON ? House Republicans on Thursday caved to demands by President Barack Obama, congressional Democrats and fellow Republicans for a short-term renewal of payroll tax cuts for all workers. The breakthrough almost certainly spares workers an average $20 a week tax increase Jan. 1.

After days of wrangling that even Speaker John Boehner acknowledged "may not have been politically the smartest thing in the world," the Ohio Republican abruptly changed course and dropped demands for immediate holiday season talks with the Senate on a full-year measure that all sides said they want. Senate leaders had insisted on the two-month extension to buy time for talks next year.

The House and Senate plan to act on the two-month extension Friday.

House Republicans were under fire from their constituents and GOP establishment figures incensed that they would risk losing the tax cut issue to Democrats at the dawn of the 2012 presidential and congressional election year. House GOP arguments about the legislative process and the "uncertainty" a two-month extension would mean for business were unpersuasive.

"In the end House Republicans felt like they were reenacting the Alamo, with no reinforcements and our friends shooting at us," said Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas.

The compromise legislation would renew the tax break through Feb. 29, along with jobless benefits and a "fix" to prevent doctors from absorbing a big cut in Medicare payments. Its $33 billion cost would be covered by an increased fee on mortgages backed by Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac.

The developments were a clear win for Obama. The payroll tax cut was the centerpiece of his three-month campaign-style drive for jobs legislation that seems to have contributed to an uptick in his poll numbers ? and taken a toll on those of congressional Republicans.

"Because of this agreement, every working American will keep his or her tax cut - about $1,000 for the average family," Obama said in a statement. "That's about $40 in every paycheck. And when Congress returns, I urge them to keep working to reach an agreement that will extend this tax cut and unemployment insurance for all of 2012 without drama or delay."

If the cuts had expired as scheduled, 160 million workers would have seen a 2 percentage point increase in their Social Security taxes. And up to 2 million people without jobs for six months would start losing unemployment benefits averaging $300 a week.

The GOP retreat ends a tense standoff in which Boehner's House Republicans came under great pressure to agree to the short-term extension passed by the Senate on Saturday. The speaker was initially open to the idea, but rank-and-file Republicans revolted, and the House instead insisted on immediate talks on the year-long measure passed by the House, which contains curbs to unemployment insurance and other ideas backed by conservatives ? as well as deeper spending cuts to pay for the full-year cost.

After Senate leaders tried but failed to match the House's goal for a full-year pact, the chamber on Saturday instead gave sweeping approval for the two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, jobless benefits and doctors' Medicare fees that otherwise would have been cut 27 percent. The House had just days before passed a full-year extension that included a series of conservative policy prescriptions unpalatable to Obama and congressional Democrats.

Obama, Republicans and congressional Democrats all said they preferred a one-year extension but the politics of achieving that eluded them. All pledged to start working on that in January.

"Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when we agree to things we can't do it?" Obama asked. "Enough is enough.".

The top Senate Republican, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, was a driving force behind Thursday's agreement, imploring Boehner to accept the deal that McConnell and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid had struck last week and passed with overwhelming support in both parties.

"There remain important differences between the parties on how to implement these policies, and it is critical that we protect middle-class families from a tax increase while we work them out," Reid said after Boehner's announcement.

The breakthrough emerged as a firewall erected by tea party-backed House Republicans crumbled Thursday.

"I don't think that my constituents should have a tax increase because of Washington's dysfunction," said freshman Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis.

The Republican establishment, too, put new pressure on House Republicans to compromise.

The 2008 GOP presidential nominee, John McCain, former Bush administration confidant Karl Rove and The Wall Street Journal editorial page were among conservative voices urging House Republicans to retreat.

Just hours before he announced the breakthrough, Boehner had made the case for a year-long extension. But on a brief late afternoon conference call, he informed his colleagues it was time to yield.

"He said that as your leader, you've in effect asked me to make decisions easy and difficult and I'm making my decision right now," said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., paraphrasing Boehner's comments.

Kingston said the conference call lasted just minutes and Boehner did not give anyone time to respond.

There was still carping among tea party freshmen upset that GOP leaders had yielded.

"Even though there is plenty of evidence this is a bad deal for America ... the House has caved yet again to the president and Senate Democrats," said Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan. "We were sent here with a clear set of instructions from the American people to put an end to business as usual in Washington, yet here we are being asked to sign off on yet another gimmick."

Almost forgotten in the firestorm is that McConnell and Boehner had extracted a major victory last week, winning a provision that would require Obama to make a swift decision on whether to approve construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would bring Canadian oil to the U.S. and create thousands of construction jobs. To block the pipeline, Obama would have to declare that is not in the nation's interest.

Obama wanted to put the decision off until after the 2012 election.

House Republicans did win one concession in addition to a promise that Senate Democrats would name negotiators on the one-year House measure: a provision to ease concerns that the 60-day extension would be hard for payroll processing companies to implement.

Bills sign DL Jarron Gilbert (AP)

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. ? The Buffalo Bills signed defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert on Saturday.

Gilbert has been on the New York Jets practice squad the past two seasons. He appeared in one game with the Jets in 2010, playing against Buffalo in the season finale.

Gilbert was Chicago's third round pick out of San Jose State in 2009, and appeared in four games as a rookie with the Bears before being released before the 2010 season.

To make room for Gilbert, the Bills released linebacker Antonio Coleman.

Buffalo (5-8) hosts Miami (4-9) Sunday.

Soyuz launches with 6 satellites in French Guiana (AP)

KOUROU, French Guiana ? A Soyuz rocket carrying six satellites launched Friday from French Guiana in the Russian-built rocket model's second mission this year.

It was to first release a French Earth observation satellite, Pleiades 1. Next to come would be four French micro-satellites and a Chilean Earth observation satellite was to be released last.

Pleiades is designed to provide images to military and civilian customers, while the four smaller satellites will be used to gather electronic intelligence for the military, according to Arianespace.

The Chilean satellite will take images for mapping, agricultural monitoring and the management of natural resources, said Arianespace, the commercial arm of the 13-country European Space Agency.

The satellites weighed a total of more than 4,400 pounds (2,000 kilograms).

The mission was the final one this year for Arianespace.

A Soyuz rocket first launched from Arianespace's complex in French Guiana in late October, carrying the first two satellites of the European Union's Galileo navigation system. It was the maiden voyage of the Russian rocket outside the former Soviet Union.

Egypt soldiers charge Tahrir Square after violent night

By NBC News and news services

CAIRO - Egyptian soldiers with batons charged into Tahrir Square on Saturday after fatal clashes nearby, prompting many demonstrators who have been camped there since last month to flee into side streets.

Shots were also fired in the air as the troops in riot gear pushed into the square following the eruption of a fire in the area around buildings associated with Egypt's upper house of parliament, a Reuters witness said. Troops were seen grabbing some people and beating them.

NBC News reported that protesters' tents had been set on fire. The military was confiscating cameras and attacking photographers and camera crews who had been reporting from the square, NBC said.

Eight people have been killed as clashes between troops and protesters in central Cairo spilled over into a second day, Egyptian state television reported.

It also said that 303 people had been wounded in the unrest in the capital, whose center has turned into a smoke-filled battleground in some of the most violent clashes since a popular uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak last February.

Egypt's Dar al-Iftah, the body that issues Islamic fatwas (edicts), said one of its senior officials, Emad Effat, was among the dead, state news agency MENA said. He was shot in the chest after joining the protesters outside the Cabinet.

Clashes around government offices and parliament raged on after nightfall on Friday, with protesters throwing Molotov cocktails and stones at soldiers who used batons and what witnesses said appeared to be electric cattle prods.

The violence has sharpened tensions between the ruling army and its opponents, and clouded a parliamentary vote set to bring Islamists, long repressed by Mubarak, to the verge of power.

It first began late Thursday after soldiers stormed an anti-military protest camp outside the Cabinet building near Tahrir Square, expelling demonstrators demanding an end to military rule and an immediate transfer of power to a civilian authority. Witnesses said troops snatched a protester, taking him into the parliament building and beating him. The troops later moved in, burning protesters' tents.

Frustration with military
The military took over after longtime President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular revolt in February. Rights groups and activists charge that the military is carrying on the practices of the old regime, including arresting and beating dissidents.

Many Egyptians have grown increasingly wary of the military and frustrated with its handling of the country's transition period, and many activists accuse it of trying to hang on to power.

Mustafa Ali, a protester who was wounded by pellet shot in clashes last month, on Saturday accused the ruling generals of instigating the violence to "find a justification to remain in power and divide up people into factions."

In a statement read on state TV Friday night, the ruling military said its forces did not intend to break up the protest and said officers showed self-restraint, denying the used any gunfire. It said the clashes began when a military officer was attacked while on duty and protesters tried to break into the parliament compound.

The young activists who led the protests against Mubarak have not translated that success into results at the polls, where Islamist parties won a clear majority of seats in the first round of voting last month over the more liberal parties that emerged from the uprising. Results from this week's second round are expected in the coming days, with the rest of the country set to vote next month.

Images of troops protecting polling centers and soldiers carrying the elderly to the polls have served to boost the military's image as guardians of the country. The military remains the ultimate authority on all matters of state in absence of a president.

The second round of voting took place Wednesday and Thursday in nine of the country's 27 provinces. It covered vast rural areas where the religious stand of Islamist parties has strong support.

Rare robin breeding sites found

Rare black-throated robins have been recorded in the Qinling mountains, north central China, by scientists.

The 14 new sightings double the total number for the species since its first discovery 125 years ago.

A team of Chinese and Swedish researchers located two breeding areas after hearing the males' distinctive calls.

The national nature reserves where the birds were found are also home to rare giant pandas and snub-nosed monkeys.

Also known as the blackthroat and black-throated blue robin, the species (Luscinia obscura) was first discovered in 1886.

The birds resemble a European robin in size and shape but the males sport a jet-black throat and chest rather than the familiar red.

To date, very little is known about the species and there have never been any definitive sightings of females.

"The species is extremely secretive and difficult to see in the dense bamboo where it lives," explained Prof Per Alstrom, of the Swedish Species Information Centre, a part of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.

Prof Alstrom and colleagues were able to identify the birds' breeding grounds after hearing their distinctive song.

"It's likely that there are approximately as many females in the wild as there are males, but males are more easy to find [because] they sing," he said.

Precious neighbourhood

The team recorded seven males each in Foping and Changqing National Nature Reserves.

"In view of the [number of birds] birds we found, this species is apparently not as rare as was previously thought, although it seems to be very local," Prof Alstrom told BBC Nature.

"We spent three and a half weeks exploring different parts of the Qinling mountains, but we found this bird only in two places."

The birds' choice of habitat gave the team of taxonomists and ornithologists hope for the survival of the species.

"The breeding areas that we discovered are well protected, as they are home to some rare mammals, such as giant panda and golden snub-nosed monkey," said Prof Alstrom.

The scientists took a number of recordings of the birds singing in the hope that this will aid future identification and greater understanding of the enigmatic robins.

Can Zynga break free from Facebook? (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? "We generate substantially all of our revenue and players through the Facebook platform and expect to continue to do so for the foreseeable future," Zynga wrote in its IPO prospectus.

Technically, the admission is called a risk factor. But since Zynga, the wildly popular maker of mobile and social games such as "Mafia Wars" and "FarmVille," generates about 95 percent of its revenue through Facebook, the worry for investors is that its relationship with Mark Zuckerberg's social network is less a risk factor than a business model.

And how Zynga ultimately performs as a public company -- it is aiming to raise $925 million at a $9 billion valuation when it begins trading on the Nasdaq on Friday -- will depend in large part on its ability to break free from Facebook. Or at least its ability to convince investors that it can do so.

So far, however, the skeptics remain unconvinced. At Zynga's IPO roadshow luncheon in San Francisco on Monday, investors spent most of the question and answer time with Zynga executives asking about Facebook.

"Any time you have such a large reliance on a single company, you have to be concerned," said Dan Niles, chief investment officer of AlphaOne Capital Partners, who didn't attend the luncheon but watched one of Zynga's presentations over the Internet.

From an investment perspective, ignoring the fact that all but 5 percent of Zynga's $828 million in revenue in the first nine months of this year came from Facebook could be detrimental.

Zynga conceded that point in its IPO prospectus, noting that, "any deterioration in our relationship with Facebook would harm our business and adversely affect the value of our Class A common stock."

Facebook takes a 30 percent cut of the revenue Zynga derives from the social network, which features more than 222 million monthly active Zynga users, according to the data tracking website AppData. Zynga itself makes most of its money from less than 3 percent of its players, who buy virtual items like trucks and poker chips.

Being so dependent on one company clearly poses risks to Zynga's growth potential. If Facebook's user growth slows, for instance, Zynga's growth is likely to slow as well. Or, in an extreme case, if Facebook suddenly decided to banish games, it could harm Zynga's entire business.

Zynga is also beholden to Facebook in other ways. According to a regulatory filing on July 18, the company has to publish some of its games exclusively on Facebook before other platforms.

What's worse, Zynga may have botched one main attempt it has thus far made at trying to break away from Facebook.

When the company unveiled its new online platform "Zynga Direct" during a rare media event at its San Francisco headquarters in October, it was billed as a way for Zynga to deal directly with its consumers without an intermediary.

But when players visited Zynga's website to sign up for a user name, called a "Z Tag," they were told to first install the Zynga app on Facebook, giving the impression that it was being more closely integrated with the world's largest social network instead of being weaned off of it.

A Zynga spokesman on Wednesday declined to comment on the company's IPO.

FACEBOOK FLIPSIDE

The counter argument is that Zynga's reliance on the platform may attract investors looking to bet on Facebook's growth. With Facebook's IPO at least several months away, there currently are not many ways to gain exposure to Facebook on the stock market.

"Ahead of Facebook's IPO, Zynga is the closest proxy investors have," said Robert W. Baird & Co analyst Colin Sebastian. "As of today, Zynga is highly dependent on Facebook and could bring in investors who are looking to find ways to gain exposure to social media."

Akram Yosri, managing partner of 3i Capital Group, attended Zynga's roadshow presentation in New York and said he was satisfied with how management responded to questions about Facebook and how Zynga can grow in partnership with the social network.

"They didn't dodge the question," said Yosri, whose firm has $1.4 billion in assets under management. "As long as it's a working relationship, it's a plus for Zynga because Facebook is going to be there a long time and has a proven business model. "

Zynga also gathers lots of data on its millions of users, more than half of whom are female, which marketers could find attractive.

CHINA AND BEYOND

Still, Zynga faces a long road to a less Facebook-dependent future. According to regulatory filings, Zynga's contract with Facebook doesn't come up for review until 2015. This gives it three years to find new revenue sources outside the social network such as moving into new markets like Asia and making more games for mobile devices.

In July, Zynga entered mainland China's games market for the first time, partnering with Chinese platform Tencent for a local version of the game "CityVille."

"Zynga has at least until that time to expand its presence in Asia and it is trying to do that aggressively in mobile," said Steve Sorrano, an equity analyst at Calvert Investment Management, which has $12 billion of assets under management.

Sorrano added, however, that investors might find Zynga too risky to bet on while it is building out its business in these new areas since it is unclear whether the company can deliver a high enough or sustainable return on capital investment.

"That's a relative unknown for a young company in an industry that is developing this rapidly. This raises risks for going in(to the stock) that early," Sorrano said.

Zynga's total expenses rose 115 percent to $747.9 million in the first nine months of the year, a sign that its international ambitions are adding to costs.

With regard to mobile, while games such as "Words With Friends" have become hits, its roughly 13 million mobile users are dwarfed by the hundreds of millions of users who play it on Facebook.

While Zynga was one of the earliest game makers on the Facebook platform, it lacks that first mover advantage on mobile. For instance, Disney released a mobile game in September called "Where's my Water" that is ranked ahead of some Zynga titles in Apple's App store.

And investors said that Zynga may already be losing market share on Facebook itself, as video game companies such as Electronic Arts make large acquisitions to compete with it. Indeed, AlphaOne's Niles pointed to EA's "The Sims Social" game, which has 28 million monthly active users, as a successful example of encroachment by another video game company on Zynga's turf.

Over time, however, there is hope the Zynga can break free from Facebook with services like "Zynga Direct." Though that service still has no date for when it will launch or which games will be available, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said that it "should help reduce Zynga's platform risk somewhat."

Editorial: What's wrong with TV, and what it might take to change it

America's favorite pastime, and perhaps that of all first-world countries, has yet to be truly rocked by technology. Sure, there have been a few true advancements like on-demand, streaming and the DVR, but only about 30 minutes of the average seven hours of TV Americans watched in 2010 was time shifted. Forty percent of homes have a DVR today, but most are just using them as tapeless VCRs. The reasons are complex and can't be summed up easily, but most would agree that DVRs and streaming options are where smartphones and MP3 players once were: plenty of people are throwing things against the wall, but nothing's sticking. I don't have the answers, but I do understand what the problem is and what it might take to change it. I can only hope that such a proposed change could become a self-fulfilled prophecy.
